Erasure poetry, sometimes called blackout poetry, refers to the practice of re-writing (or erasing) a cultural document or speech in order to cast it in a different light. While it of course has no party or ideological alliance implicit to it, it has emerged as a powerful form of creative expression. In this class, we will look at examples of erasure poetry, discuss the social/political implications of the form (and its limits), as well as identify the computer technology required. By the end of class we will all complete at least two erasure poems, so come with some texts in mind that you would like to "erase"!
