Clave Gringa is a Seattle band, formed in 2008, to showcase Cuban-jazz compositions of Ann Reynolds. The energy and spirit of Clave Gringa reflects a commitment to an authentic expression of music and is an invitation to get up and move. Repertoire includes a broad spectrum of Cuban styles from Cuban son and danzon to rumba and Afro Cuban with an infusion of American jazz. Two band members are originally from Cuba; the band leader, Ann Reynolds, has studied in Cuba for many years. Other band members are very experienced Latin music players.
The band began playing in small local clubs, but has now progressed to major concert and festival events in the northwest. Clave Gringa was invited to participate in the Seattle Women in Jazz Festival (2013, 2014) and also in the Earshot Jazz monthly concert series at the Seattle Art Museum. Performances regularly sell out.
In 2014, Clave Gringa produced its first CD, Para Cuba Con Amor, which has received critical acclaim for the compositions and interpretation of the music. The CD was nominated by Earshot Jazz for a Golden Ear award for Best NW Recording of 2014.
Clave Gringa works in a variety of formats, most often as a quartet or sextet. Personnel Include:
Ann Reynolds leader, composer, piano, voice Enrique (Kiki) Valera Cuban cuatro Ryan Kotler bass Steve Smith congas/percussion
