Andrew Duhon
Andrew Duhon and his band visited Port Townsend for the first time this past September and played one of the very best shows I have had the pleasure to present. The crowd was modest, but appreciative, and I just would not feel right if I didn't make sure more of you got the opportunity to hear this fine songwriter and performer.
Andrew hails from New Orleans, where his 2014 release, The Moorings, was recorded by the great Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow, Josh Ritter, Rodney Crowell...), so it is no surprise that it was nominated for a Grammy for Best Engineered Album. Of course, every great record starts with the songs and performances and Andrew does not disappoint. To record The Moorings, Andrew teamed up with upright bassist, Myles Weeks, and drummer, Maxwell Zemanovic, who also joined Andrew on the road to tour in support of the record. Recording and touring as a trio clearly influenced Andrew's latest record, False River. "They certainly pushed me in a new direction," Duhon told Billboard... These new songs came along not just as solo compositions the way I had written in the past, but I allowed what the trio was doing to start musically pushing and musically informing me to write more thoughtful music, basically. Before this record I would have told you the lyrics come first, but in playing with these guys the music came about first that put me in a space the lyrics had to fit into more rigidly. So some of this stuff was a learning curve in trying to write songs that way."
For this show, Andrew will still have Myles Weeks holding down the bottom, adding Jim Colacek on drums, and Daniel Walker on piano & accordion.
Reviews:
One of the best things I've heard all year...If the songs on this album are anything to go by, Andrew Duhon will be a big name before long.... Duhon brings the craft of a master short story writer to his songs and in doing so creates a series of skilfully rendered vignettes. John Scott, The LA Beat
This record is genius. Not kidding. It is unbelievably great. This young man has it. The singing, the playing, the production...its all there. Strikingly good. The world needs to hear this record. George Howard, former president of Rykodisc
Another world-class voice is heard from Louisiana, another soulful, mesmerizing singer who writes emotional songs with impact and heart. Andrew Duhon is a troubadour for the next generation, a story-teller for his generation. Measured in the blues with the gift of narrative, Andrews songs will not only make you think, they will make you sing along, days later. This a young artist to watch, and to hear, as soon as you can find a way. John Snyder, ArtistHouseMusic.com
