HAIR Presented by Theatre 55
HAIR: created by Galt MacDermot, James Rado, and Gerome Ragni.
Theatre 55's inaugural production of the 1968 musical HAIR was selected due to both its 50th Broadway anniversary and its unique timeliness to an anti-establishment political climate. HAIR, was originally produced as a protest to contemporary issues facing the country and contains themes of race, sexual freedom, environmentalism, religion, and freedom of speech. All of these are prevalent in this show and remain prevalent today.
HAIR brings to life the story of a New York tribe of hippies in the "Age of Aquarius", bohemians--living, loving, and railing against the Vietnam War. Claude, Berger, Sheila, and their friends struggle to find their place in the world amid the sexual revolution, rejection of the parent's conservative values, and the ongoing draft of young men to fight for the U.S. in Vietnam--a war they are vehemently against.
Theatre 55 was created in 2018 to fill a need in the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota: theatre performed artists of a certain age. The community of elders who will be performing will have not only been a part of this pivotal time in the past but are reliving it today. Some would say that strides made during the past 50 years are in jeopardy today. And those same people can find voice through the theatre to speak up and speak out.
The theatre was formed with the purpose of developing lifelong learning through theatre performance and education.
Our vision is to enrich the lives of elders as artists, audiences, and lifelong learners through theatre performance and education.
All sales are final.
