Ryan Oliver Jazz Quartet @CharsLanding

a Juno-nominated tenor sax player who recently moved to the west coast after 17 years in Toronto / New York. He tours with the Shuffle Demons and many other groups and has performed at most major jazz festivals throughout Canada.
Working as the Executive Director and jazz faculty member for the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre (CYMC), Ryan will be in Port Alberni with his band (usually featuring Dr. Tony Genge) doing workshops with high school jazz programs on Thursday November 22 and the 29th and has offered to set up a concert while in town. Ryan will encourage a few of the students he works with in the afternoon to bring their instruments to the concert and join the group for a tune to jam.

Ryan Oliver BIO: Juno-nominated saxophonist Ryan Oliver honed his craft living on Canadas west coast, and in Amsterdam, Toronto and New York. He has maintained a busy schedule as one of Canadas most in-demand saxophonists, recently releasing Strive!, featuring jazz legend Victor Lewis. Over the last 15 years, Oliver has toured the world with legendary Canadian group, The Shuffle Demons. He is a member of Juno-award-winning Aboriginal rock performer Derek Millers band, and appears on Millers most recent recording, featuring Stevie Ray Vaughns rhythm section Double Trouble and Willie Nelson. Oliver is also a member of the house band for Millers television series, airing on the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network. The Cookers, a group Oliver co-leads, has toured extensively throughout Canada, appearing on numerous recordings and broadcasts including live video broadcasts for CBC. He has received numerous Canada and Ontario Arts Council grants for touring, recording and education and was nominated for the 2013 Prix De Jazz at the Montreal Jazz Festival.
Oliver holds a Masters degree in music from Rutgers University, where he led the undergraduate big band, and has taught saxophone and ensemble clinics at universities and schools throughout the world for over 20 years. He currently teaches saxophone to students throughout Vancouver Island and instructs several student and adult jazz combos in Victoria. He has worked as an adjudicator for the Fraser MacPherson Scholarship and the Victoria and Powell River Jazz Festivals. In 2017, Oliver took over as the Executive Director for the Comox Valley Youth Music Centre (CYMC).
