A Game of Love and Chance
Marivaux on the Roof: A Game of Love and Chance at the Southside Theater
Rabbi Sassoon has found a nice boy for his daughter Sarah: Sapir a smart kid, a scholar, and the son of Rabbi Shelim Penkar! How could a marriage not take place? Of course, Rabbi Sassoon has never met Sapir, and neither has Sarah, but if he is half of a third of what his papa says he is!
Rabbi Sassoon and Rabbi Shelim Penkar are open minded: They wont force their children to marry if they dont like each other. They should first meet, and then Think of it as catalogue shopping, Sarah: You dont like the item, I ship him back to his father. He doesnt like you? Then hes a fool and I ship him back to his father!
All should have been for the best, but for mazal, chance, destiny! Sapir wants to observe Sarah incognito, so he trades places with his driver, Beadle. Of course, Sarah has the exact same idea, and trades places with Pnina, the housemaid. Oy!
What should a rabbis daughter do when she falls in love with a driver? What should a rabbis son do when he falls in love with a housemaid? And what should we do when Marivaux an early-18th Century French playwright makes us laugh at the everlasting and universal flaws of the human heart? Sholem Aleichem an early-20th Century Jewish playwright answers in his epitaph: When the world laughs, he cries in secret, so no-one sees only God knows this.
