Burning
Burning is the searing examination of an alienated young man, Jongsu, a frustrated introvert whose already difficult life is complicated by the appearance of two people into his orbit: first, Haemi, a spirited woman who offers romantic possibility, and Ben (Steven Yeun, Okja, The Walking Dead), a wealthy and sophisticated young man she returns from a trip with. When Jongsu learns of Bens mysterious hobby and Haemi suddenly disappears, his confusion and obsession begin to mount, culminating in a stunning finale.
Based on Barn Burning by Haruki Murakami, Burning is the South Korean entry for Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, and was selected to compete for the Palme dOr at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and won the FIPRESCI Prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
Desire, ravenous and ineffable, shudders through Burning The larger, more agonizing question here, though, involves what it means to live in a divided, profoundly isolating world that relentlessly drives a wedge between the self and others. Manohla Dargis, New York Times
