Get in the mood for the holidays with the Chorale's presentation of Rejoice and Sing! We open the concert with J. Edmund Hughes quietly meditative combination of two traditional texts accompanied by handbells: the Latin "Hodie Christus natus est, hodie Salvator apparuit" (Christ is born today, today the Savior has come), with "O come, O Come, Emmanuel". Traditionalists will enjoy two favorite selections from Handel's "Messiah", "Glory to God" and "Hallelujah". John Rutter's lively "Rejoice and Sing" incorporates the tradition carol text of "I Saw Three Ships Come Sailing In", building to a joyful crescendo in the words For Christ is born in Bethlehem on Christmas day in the morning. Also included are works by contemporary composers, such as Ola Gjeilo's mysterious "Tundra", featuring evocative drawn-out chord clusters that embody the essence of the winter landscape. David von Kampen's "A Cradle Hymn" is an exquisitely tender meditation on the Nativity, as is Jake Narverud's heartfelt "Lunar Lullaby".
