The Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen comes to Los Angeles. Oberhausen, Germany hosts what is probably the world's leading festival for short films, and Filmforum is bring two of their programs from 2012 to Los Angeles. Filmforum remains committed to bringing the best art films from around the world to Los Angeles. We hope that you will join us as we look at some of the leading contemporary work. To the best of our knowledge, these are all Los Angeles, and West Coast premieres, and some might be US premieres!
North America, Kenya, Singapore: the artists represented in this year's Artist Film & Video program spirit us away down their very own personal paths leading to distant climes both real and imaginary. In the process, the award-winning and by all means political films provide insights into the current state of international media art. http://www.kurzfilmtage.de
Screening: The Sweetness of Mother's Hair by Jana Debus (2011, Germany, color, 18 min.) An alchemy of one man's image and another man's words. A portrait that maintains its right to stay a mystery. A song, a riddle, an owl, a frozen shoreline, urban savannah: fragments of brief encounters with wild and urban creatures and tender gestures in unsettling environments. A tribute to man, that mysterious creature.
Applied Theories of Expanding Minds by Lena Bergendahl and Rut Karin Zettergren (2011, Sweden, Kenya, color, 33 min.) A fanatic group of individuals in Kenya have created an alternative to the existing society by making the earth's magnetic fields run their lives. The film follows their rituals in a society that for a long time has been controlled by China.
Sounding Glass by Sylvia Schedelbauer (2011, Germany, black and white, 10 min.) A man in the forest: inner and outer images overlay each other.
Jalan Jati by Lucy Davis (2012, Singapore, color, 23 min.) Part magic, part science, part eco-historical investigation, this animated film traces real and imagined journeys of a teak bed found in Singapore across Asia to the original tree, using DNA. A film about the memories of wood, trees and people.
