PAN_ACT / GOETHE TALKS: James Hoff & Mathew Dryhurst
As part of the June PAN_ACT festival, ISSUE Project Room and Goethe-Institut New York present a free talk and listening-session with artist, publisher, musician, and 2013 ISSUE Artist-In-Residence James Hoff, followed by "Dispatch" a performance system and public conversation by Mathew Dryhurst.
James Hoff presents several new virus-derived sound pieces, and a conversation about his work's recent focus on computer viruses as a tool for the creation of graphic or sonic works. In particular, the Hoff elaborates on his recent audio projects utilizing the Anna Kournikova worm and several new art works utilizing the Morris worm, underscoring his use of this methodology in conceptual writing and artworks. James Hoff is an artist living and working in Brooklyn, New York. His work encompasses sound, painting, writing, performance, and publishing. He is the co-founder of Primary Information (with Miriam Katzeff), a non-profit arts organization devoted to publishing artists' books and art-historical documents. He has lectured throughout Europe and the United States at venues such as the MCA (Denver, CO), the Pompidou (Paris, France), the Sorbonne (Paris, France) and the National Academy of Art (Oslo, Norway).
"Dispatch" is a performance system and public conversation by Mathew Dryhurst, addressing the rising prominence and significant potential of alacritous artistic expression within contemporary art and music. Reflecting shifting economic realities and a 24 hour streaming culture, a new multimedia practice has emerged, characterized by timely responses to global conversations and the steady accumulation of status. "Dispatch" is an attempt to plot the ascendancy of this new time-based medium, and speculate on it's potential to accelerate quick witted gestures online (URL) toward powerful collective actions IRL. Mathew Dryhurst is an artist, curator and technologist with a background in product development and electronic arts. Dryhurst performs regularly under his own name, and as 'body' with Holly Herndon. He is Director of Programs at Gray Area Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco.
