OLA SOL 2013
Olá Sol! (adeus chuva) Hello Sun! (goodbye rain) Brazilian Music Celebrating the Arrival of Summer 2013 in Portland, Oregon
Join us for an evening of sensuous melodies and tropical rhythms of Brazil performed by local Portland music groups CHORO DA ALEGRIA and VARIEGADOS.
CHORO DA ALEGRIA The trio will play classics from Bossa Nova, Choro, Samba, and MPB. Jobim, Chico Buarque, Toquinho, Vinicius, and Paulinho da viola are among the composers whose works the trio will perform acoustically.
VARIEGADOS Play a rich mixture of genres, drawing from folkloric rhythms of northeast Brazil (like Baiao and Xote) and MPB (Musica Popular Brasileira). Luiz Gonzaga and Marisa Monte are among their influences. This is a unique opportunity to see and hear these genres as a small-format acoustic presentation. The alluring sound of Variegados will make you sway (if not dance!). ====================================================== More about CHORO DA ALEGRIA: Tom Pinit (bandolim/Brazilian mandolin) Has played violin, electric bass, and most recently mandolin, Tom was bitten by the Brazilian music bug soon after taking up the bandolim. Tom has studied choro with world-renowned musicians Mike Marshall (CA), Dudu Maia (Brazil), Douglas Lora (Brazil), and Jovino Santos Neto (WA). Tom is active in Portland's choro scene playing in several local groups. Recently Tom co-produced Portland's Dia do Choro PDX celebration.
Pam Beaty (guitar, cavaquinho) is a classically-trained guitarist who has been a long-time devotee of Brazilian music. Drawing inspiration from Segovia to Jobim, to Bonfa, she is passionate about guitar, and Brazilian music. Pam teaches guitar at colleges in the Portland area, and performs in several ensembles. She is an active member of Portland's Bossa Nova and Choro scene.
Peter Fung (guitar and percussion) has been happily obsessed with samba and choro for the last two decades. He has been a performing member of the Manhattan School of Samba (NYC), the Lions of Batucada (Portland), and Samba do Coraçao (SF Bay Area). Peter has studied music in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, Brazil. Among his teachers are Arnaldinho do Cavaco, Alexandre Lora, Derek Rieth, among others. Peter is founder of Portland's annual Dia do Choro PDX, and a core member of the local samba pagode community.
More about VARIEGADOS: Renata Austin (vocals) has performed as a vocalist and percussionist with numerous folk and contemporary music groups including Brazilian, American, Andean, Mexican, and Balkan genres. As a young woman Renata toured internationally singing with the San Francisco Girls Chorus. In addition to Variegados, Renata currently performs with Portland's samba bateria, Bloco Alegria, and in a family band with her father and two sisters in the SF Bay area.
Avery Welkin (guitar) plays a wide variety of styles and genres. His background of 15 years in classical and jazz training includes teachers such as Bill Sweeney, Dan Balmer, and Pepe Barcellos. He has studied Brazilian music in Germany, Brazil, and the US with a focus on the guitar and the cuica drum. In addition to Variegados, Avery plays with Portland's samba bateria, Bloco Alegria. Beyond performance, Avery has an ethno-musicological interest in Brazil.
