Dave Aaronoff and The Protagonists with The Darlings and The Invaders
The great country legend George Jones passed away last month. Saturday May 25, three of Boston's best country bands will salute "The Possom." The Darlings, Dave Aaronoff & the Protagonists, and The Invaders will play George Jones tunes, as well as original songs that have been inspired by the world of alcohol-soaked heartbreak that George Jones embodied.
Dave Aaronoff has been writing and recording music in Boston for the past nineteen years. Having played in various rock n' Roll bands in the 90's & 00's ( The Shods, The Pills, Mighty Mighty Bosstones), in 2006 Dave began a solo career and released the album Into The Drink. At this point his sounds were turning to the darker side of country music and he assembled a band to fit this new direction. The Protagonists feature some of Boston's most talented musicians: Todd Foulsham (drums), Eric Schmider (guitar), Joe Klompus (upright bass), Tim Obetz (pedal steel), Meredith Cooper (violin), and Rebekah Turner (vocals). The songs are often sardonic and comical, and are steeped in traditional American country, folk, honky-tonk, and rock n' roll, and occasionally veer into classic pop and tin-pan-alley era music.
Backing themselves up on acoustic guitars Kelly Knapp and Simon Ritt share The Darlings spotlight with their spot-on vocals, harmony and charm. Billy Loosigian provides the twang with his over the top electric guitar playing. A local legend under his own power, Billy has played blistering guitar with some of New England's best known bands including such great's as The Nervous Eaters and Willie Alexander & The Boom-Boom band. Drummer Norman Hartley first teamed up with Loosigian when they where both in The Souls. Easily one of the finest drummer's around and when not playing with The Darlings Norm can be found pounding the ol' country-rock skins for Paved Country. Bassist Ed Riemer is also the third harmony on many of the songs found on 'New Depression'. Ed has played in some of Boston's hottest outfits including Band 19 and The Wheelers & Dealers.
The Invaders Rockabilly band is the alter ego of the legendary Boston band The Shods. While the Shods were struggling to make a name for themselves, the members of the band often played as the Invaders, both for the love of Rockabilly and to pay some bills. It has been many years since the Invaders have joined forces. Don't miss this rare performance!
