SPARK AND ECHO ARTS PREMIERES "AMONG FOOLS: A SUBRATIONAL SOUNDPAINTING" BY EVAN MAZUNIK AT IRONDALE CENTER ON JUNE 21, 2013
THIS COMMISSIONED WORK FEATURES A MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESPONSE TO ECCLESIASTES COMPOSED IN REALTIME
Sponsored by Flat World Productions (www.flatworldpro.com)
BROOKLYN, NY Spark and Echo Arts will present "Among Fools: A Subrational Soundpainting" by Evan Mazunik at Irondale Center on June 21, 2013 at 8:00pm (doors at 7:30pm). Tickets are $12 at the door or $10 in advance; to purchase tickets, go to http://amongfools.brownpapertickets.com. Irondale Center is located at 85 South Oxford Street, Brooklyn, New York, 11217, between Lafayette and Fulton Streets in the historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church.
"Among Fools" will be a 50-minute multidisciplinary performance for musicians, actors, dancers, and visual artists. Text, movement, and visuals will be generated from anagrams of the scripture passage from Ecclesiastes: "The words of the wise heard in quiet are better than the shouting of a ruler among fools." (Ecclesiastes 9:17) Graphic scores, structured improvisation, and traditional notation will be woven together into an open-form piece, evoking the surreal mystery of Richard Foreman's theater and Anthony Braxton's music.
For this show, Evan will direct the ensemble using Soundpainting, a sign language for live composition, as the group composes their program in realtime. As the Soundpainter, Mazunik signs a phrase using hand gestures, listens and watches the players, and, in turn, develops their responses by signing a new phrase, continuously creating the score in the moment.
"I'm honored to be commissioned by Spark & Echo to engage with this Scriptural aphorism," said composer Evan Mazunik. "Irondale has been a champion in the past for new works in an experimental vein, and I'm thrilled to return to Irondale over the summer for this world premiere."
