Romeo & Juliet - A Production of the Arts-A-F!RE Youth Theater Troupe
Set in Memphis in 2013, Romeo & Juliet, William Shakespeare's production takes on a contemporary theme of feuding gangs. In this case, the romantic tragedy of the two young lovers involves the Montague and Capulet families and their servants. The teens in the Arts-A-F!RE Youth Theater Troupe will use Shakespearean language while telling this story.
Directed by Leslie "Sticky" Reddick, actors will display fight choreography using contemporary tools of violence. Yet they will also demonstrate the importance of dialogue and communication in problem solving.
The production staff will work closely with the actors throughout the process providing them with information and training in the language of the play and conflict resolution. While Shakespearean language will be used contemporary tools of violence and movement will be used to modernize the play to today's youth.
At the conclusion of the play the audience will be invited to "talk back" about the play.
