Event
Three Farms, Food, and Music!
On Saturday August 24 Growing Home, Breslin Farms and Cedar Valley Sustainable Farm will team up to present a farm tour event that you don't want to miss.
The tour will begin at 2 pm at Growing Home's Les Brown Memorial Farm in Marseilles IL (About an hour and twenty minutes from the loop). With farms in the Englewood and Back of the Yards neighborhoods in Chicago, as well as the 10-acre Les Brown Memorial Farm in Marseilles, Illinois, Growing Home seeks to operate, promote, and demonstrate the use of organic agriculture as a vehicle for job training, employment, and community development. The site in Marseilles includes 10 acres of certified organic farm land, including a residence for the farmers, a native habitat for bees and other beneficial organisms, and two large hoophouses.
From there a 15 minute drive west to Breslin Farms at 3:30 pm, a father-and-daughter operation growing certified organic row crops on the family farm. With a focus on biodiversity and sustainability, they concentrate on small grains and dry beans.
One more 15 minute drive to finish the day at Cedar Valley Sustainable Farm, (5 8 pm), a family farm raising livestock, and home of Chicago's first meat CSA. After a tour, Jody and Beth Osmund will host an informal cook-out style dinner featuring products from all three farms. The evening will conclude with live music by Katie Belle and Duffle bag Joe (seen at The Hideout).
Cost will be $30 per person (kids 12 and under $12.50). Come prepared to walk, we'll cover a lot of ground (bringing a water bottle is recommended). No pets please.
