He Roars

"I didn't realize how greatly that moment would change my life. How greatly it would change everything. I turned my head to gaze over at Charlie as we sat in history class, world news unraveling right before our eyes. I wish every day I could go back to that class to the days and weeks before, where we watched airplanes crashing and buildings collapsing, and people moving through the air like they might fly if only I could pray imaginary wings into life. I wish I could back to that day and take that light out of his eyes. That i could have known, could have had the courage to tell him that when he finally picked up his duffel bag and slid on his beret, that he would be leaving more of himself on that shelf than old schoolbooks and childhood memories. That sometimes when we set out to save souls, we forget the one that we should value the most."
