Join us for an artist's reception with photographer Carolyn Sherer and many of the subjects of the photographs of Living in Limbo in attendance on May 31 from 7-9 pm at the West Hollywood Library. This reception will also serve as a kickoff to One City One Pride Queer Arts Festival. The reception is free but RSVPs are required.
Living in Limbo: Lesbian Families in the Deep South is presented by The City of West Hollywood part of the One City One Pride Queer Arts Festival through its Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission, Lesbian and Gay Advisory Board, and Transgender Advisory Board.
This exhibition was the first full exhibit about the LGBT community to be shown at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama, whose mission is to promote civil and human rights worldwide through education. The public display of the work marked photographer Carolyn Sherer's "coming out" and that of a number of other participants. In a state that has legislated discrimination against the LGBT community, many risked loss of jobs, child custody, and family acceptance.
The exhibit will be on display from Friday, April 19, 2013 through Wednesday, July 10, 2013 during regular operating hours at the West Hollywood Library 625 N. San Vicente Blvd. (M-Th 11-7, Fr-Sa 10-6).
An Artist Talk organized by the June Mazer Lesbian Archives will be held on June 1 at 2pm. (To RSVP for this use the drop down box below to choose the June 1 date)
Free Validated Parking will be available for the reception in the five-story Public Parking Structure, with access from El Tovar Place.
One City One Pride queer arts festival is held throughout late May and June, but centered on the dates of May 31-June 16, comprising both free and ticketed events featuring theatre, film, music, spoken word, visual art, a parade, and much more!
