loadbang Performs: Concert in the Crypt at the Church of the Intercession
November 14, 2018: Concert in the Crypt at the Church of the Intercession (New York, NY) loadbang will be performing music in this remarkable space by composers including Eve Beglarian, Jeffrey Gavett, Evan Johnson, William Lang, Hannah Lash, Paula Matthusen and a NY premiere of a new work for loadbang by Christian Wolff. 7:30pm
November 15th at 7:30PM at the Crypt of Church of the Intercession in Manhattan, loadbang performs a program of works selected to highlight the venues unique acoustic. This underground crypt, seating only 50 people, has a beautiful natural reverberance that will enhance the works chosen.
Eve Beglarian and Paula Matthusen's works utilize electronics to effect a kind of doubling of loadbang's instrumentation in different ways. Beglarian's Island of the Sirens requires the instrumentalists to double portions of an electronic track that they hear played into an earpiece, translating as best they can in real time. Matthusen's old fires catch old buildings makes use of a quartet of cassette tapes playing back a collage of recordings of the individual members of loadbang, making a spatialized octet.
Evan Johnson's my pouert and goying ouer is an incredibly delicate and detailed work, with an expression refined down to the quietest sounds. Each fleeting phrase is framed with silence, with a tension that will only be enhanced by the crypt's unique reverb. Christian Wolffs Just So Youll Know will be heard in its New York premiere on this performance. The work sets several texts by eminent New York poet John Ashbery, and moves between comic and profound registers with ease. Hannah Lashs work Eight Lungs is the first of the trio of homages that form the center of this program. A gloss on Henry Purcells Dido and Aeneas, her work takes advantage of the breath-powered unity of loadbang, blending the colors of each instrument and voice.
Members of loadbang Jeffrey Gavett and William Lang contribute works to the program. Gavett's Quis det ut is an homage and transformation of a beloved medieval work - Absalon Fili Mi (attributed to Josquin Des Prez or Pierre de la Rue) - which stretches the duration of the work as if slowed down on analog tape. Lang's Sciarrino Songs is also an homage - in this case to the unique sui generis compositional language of Salvatore Sciarrino. In five short movements, the piece employs a close focus on simple sound objects.
