Canadian Rajah
Canadian Rajah is the incredible and true story of Esca Brooke. Born in Sarawak (now part of Malaysia), Esca was the son of that country's legendary White Rajah and his Malay wife. When the Rajah added an English wife to the mix, he felt it politically wise to remove his firstborn son Esca from the scene.
Esca Brooke ended up in Canada, arriving in the village of Madoc, Ontario in the dead of winter, 1884. From those frigid beginnings, he went on to build a successful life in Canada. He was happy but for one thing. He was desperate to be recognized for who he was, the son of Rajah Charles Brooke. Canadian Rajah by playwright Dave Carley depicts the dramatic showdown that ended that lifelong quest.
Jon De Leon plays Esca Brooke. A veteran actor in TV and film, Jon has also performed at the Stratford Festival, where he was a member of that theatre's prestigious Birmingham Conservatory.
As Esca, he must face down the formidable Ranee of Sarawak, who is determined to quash any possibility that Esca can return to Sarawak and assert a claim to the throne. Chick Reid plays the Ranee. An actor well known to patrons of the Shaw and Stratford Festivals, Chick has also acted at almost every major theatre across Canada.
The third star of the play is the Campbell House ballroom. It comes alive in period splendour as the grand reception room of Ranee Brooke's London townhouse. It is there that she and Esca will wage battle.
Canadian Rajah runs from Wednesday, January 30 to Sunday, February 17. It is a story full of surprises and twists of history. It is also a long overdue vindication for the young man who was exiled to Canada, his name and identity all but erased.
Canadian Rajah is directed by Sarah Phillips.
The play runs 70 minutes with no intermission. Doors open 30 minutes before the performance.
