The Meisner Approach to Playwriting
The Meisner Approach to Playwriting
Taught by New York playwright, Britton Buttrill. MFA student in Playwriting at The New School for Drama.
"The Meisner Approach to Playwriting" is a new spin on traditional playwriting techniques. In this class, students will utilize the techniques of Sanford Meisner to construct emotionally true plays with real stakes and naturalistic dialogue. By using a combination of Meisner repetition exercises and free-write techniques, students will learn to create naturalistic dialogue that captures the way people really talk. This class takes the traditional dramatic arch technique and boils it down to the essence of drama, straying away from traditional mechanics, creating plays that are truly authentic.
This class is designed for beginner playwrights who are looking to grow in the field, and intermediate to advanced playwrights who want to explore a different take on the traditional playwriting structure. The class will take place once a week for four weeks, with the goal of writing a final five-minute play that will be read by professional actors at the culmination of the class. Most importantly, this class will challenge its students to look within themselves in order to create dangerous and emotionally authentic work that can truly challenge an audience.
