If you get stumped after "Fun Home" when trying to list your top 3 shows with intelligent, queer women leads, you now understand one of the reasons for "Out in the Open"s allure and eminent necessity. With society striding farther into progressive waters than it ever has, why do we still lack complex female roles in the theater, let alone for queer identified persons? "Out in the Open" offers a peek into the life of Bri, who experiences the infinitely sophisticated pressures and choices of everyday life as she attempts to navigate unexpected relationships. In this "slice of life new play by James Schilling, we see the struggle for normalcy in a friendship that begins to bloom into something more, the discovery of the depth familial bonds when facing mortality, and the unmasking of a betrayer when the truth comes to light. This play never attempts to claim a moral or answer, but asks intelligent questions about the existentialism and common perplexities of life.
This production is the Senior Thesis Project of Riley Gene, James Schilling, Hannah Morin, Hannah Kathline, and Sarah White at Cornish College of the Arts.
