Christine Otten with the Last Poets
It is half a century since the Last Poets stood in Harlem, uttered their first words in public, and created the blueprint for hip-hop. Today, their revolutionary words are as relevant as ever. Join us for an evening with the band and the author who chronicled their lives in the novel The Last Poets.
Christine is a real... Whitegirl. A SERIOUS DUTCH WHITEGIRL! But she's our Whitegirl!
This is how Umar Bin Hassan, one of the Last Poets describes Christine Otten, the author of the novel The Last Poets which is based on the band members lives. After meeting several years ago, the Dutch author and Umar felt an instant connection, and Christine spent three months travelling across the United States interviewing members of the Last Poets, their families, friends, and musicians. Christine Otten and the Last Poets Umar Bin Hassan, Abiodun Oyewole and Baba Donn Babatunde will be launching the book with an event at the Bowery Poetry Club on November 12th at 8:30pm. Join us for a performance by the legendary fathers of hip-hop, a brief reading and Q&A with the band and the author who wrote about their lives. Tickets $20, includes a free copy of the book The Last Poets.
