RIVER REGION BALLET NUTCRACKER
The River Region Ballet will perform The Nutcracker, with music by P. I. Tchaikovsky based on the story Nutcracker and The Mouse King by E. T. A. Hoffmann. The Nutcracker is perhaps the most performed ballet in the world. It premiered on December 17, 1882 at the Marinsky Theatre. For about two months around every Christmas, literally hundreds of versions are staged, not just by professional companies but also by youth companies. It is the traditional introduction to ballet for small children and has given thousands their first glimpse of classical ballet. Every holiday season, all over the country, ballet dance companies large and small come together to preserve the Christmas tradition that is Tchaikovskys The Nutcracker. The reason for an annual performance of the Nutcracker is in order to give young dancers the opportunity to perform at every level of their young dance career in a familiar production. The young dancer can aspire to more challenging roles as their dance expertise develops. Few ballets offer the variety and number of roles that The Nutcracker offers. An annual production allows young dancers to attain dreams. Because of the numerous parts in this production, it takes several years for young dancers to advance to the corps de ballet and soloist roles, thus another reason to continue the process that was started fifteen years ago. We have had hundreds of dancers progress through the various levels of dancing in the Nutcracker, and dozens more are currently making that progression.
