Wed, Nov 28th, 7:30pm (doors 7), Maddie Storvold Open Book Western Canada Tour
Folk / Roots / Songwriter
Born in Cold Lake, Alberta, and moved at an early age to the bustling global hub of Dubai, Maddie Storvold is no stranger to an eclectic lifestyle.
She spent her youth travelling and playing music in bars and hostels all over the world, from Toronto to Thailand, Amsterdam to South Africa, and many places in between. Despite her nomadic upbringing, this emerging songwriter places great importance on growing into her career as a distinctly Canadian artist. In an industry riddled with clichés and the-next-big-hits, Storvolds work is heartbreakingly authentic. With a background as a spoken-word poet and a degree from Western University in Literature and Philosophy, she possesses striking nuance and depth in her lyrics. That poignant lyricism, emotive finger picking, and a honeyed, impassioned voice often compared to Joni Mitchell and Eva Cassidy seek to tell us a story, to move us, and to touch a fragile part of the human spirit. She hopes to help harken in a new era of songwriters and live performers, fostering connection in a world that has lost so much of it.
Edmonton Folk Festival describes Storvold as an outstanding young artist, elaborating: the clarity of Maddies voice could very well be drifting out of a Greenwich Village folk club in the early 60s. Maddies songs are political and deeply empathetic.
Now an active and enthusiastic member of the Edmonton music community, this 23-year-old artist released her debut LP The Old Brag Of My Heart to a sold-out crowd. She spent the summer on tour with Vancouver-based artist C.R. Avery, and finished off her first Canadian summer with performances at the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, in August.
