The Ken Maiuri Mixtape
Pop music geek/DJ/writer/musician Ken Maiuri has for decades written songs and recorded them at home, playing everything himself a la Todd Rundgren, R. Stevie Moore or Prince -- and usually, at home is where the songs stayed.
In the '90s he fronted the sharp and speedy trio Ribboncandy (Mission of Burma meets The Monkees? McCartney fronting The Buzzcocks?), which still regroups for the odd show when asked, but mostly he's been a studio go-to guy and happy participant in others' projects, touring internationally with Mark Mulcahy, The Young@Heart Chorus, Pedro the Lion, The Mammals, Spouse and many more.
Then suddenly some Local People In Charge of Things said they wanted to see a Maiuri-fronted night. They gave him friendly but firm nudges and, after some nervous hemming and hawing, it's happening: The Ken Maiuri Mixtape.
It's a triple-bill variety show of sorts, featuring...
The Super 8 Players! A trio whose repertoire consists only of songs from movie soundtracks, played unplugged/busking style. The threesome of Jason Mazzotta, Debbie Way and Maiuri opened for the classic film noir The Third Man at Pothole Pictures last year and gently tickled the crowd with tunes from The Jerk, Harold & Maude and more.
The TV Show! It's the brainchild of bassist Dave Hayes, who, like his bandmates F. Alex Johnson on guitar, J.J. O'Connell on drums and Maiuri on keyboards, has had a deep love for the "catchy and perfect musical minute over the opening credits" since he was a little kid. Their short set will act as a "sneak preview for the fall season" -- aka the band's full-length debut performance, planned for late this year (or early next).
The Four Color Press! The debut of a new band that plays the material created by Maiuri when he made himself write and record a song every day, using his old four-track recorder. It resulted in a month of wildly diverse and hooky tunes, most of which have never been performed live -- until now. Keyboard man Levi Graft, multi-instrumentalists Stephen Gallo and Jason Mazzotta, drummer J.J. O'Connell and Maiuri will bring the Four Color songs into living color.
