The Kings College Theatre Department will present the hilarious comedy written by four-time Tony winner Terrence McNally, Its Only a Play at 7:30 p.m. on November 8-10 and 15-17 at 7:30 pm and on November 11 at 2pm in the George P. Maffei II Theatre.
Directed by M. Sheileen Godwin, this hilarious comedy is a celebration of theatre at its best and theatre people behaving their not-so-best. Its opening night of Peter Austin's new Broadway play, The Golden Egg, and the wealthy producer Julia Budder is throwing a lavish party in her lavish Manhattan townhouse. Downstairs the celebrities are pouring in, but the real action is upstairs in the bedroom, where a group of insiders have staked themselves out to await the reviews. The group includes the excitable playwright; the possibly unstable wunderkind director; the pill-popping leading lady, treading the boards after becoming infamous in Hollywood; and the playwrights best friend, for whom the play was written but who passed up this production for a television series. Add to this a drama critic whos panned the playwright in the past and a wide-eyed coat check attendant/aspiring singer on his first night in Manhattan and you have a prime recipe for the narcissism, ambition, childishness, and just plain irrationality that infuse the theatre. But dont worry: This play is sure to be the hit they have all been hoping for. Terrence McNallys Its Only a Play, is alternately raucous, ridiculous, hilarious, and tender reminding audiences why theres no business like show business.
