Grand Harmonie: Mendelssohn Symphony no. 3
Following a spectacular orchestral premiere of Mozart, Weber, and Schubert featuring a lecture by Professor Robert Levin, Grand Harmonie presents its second orchestral program under the baton of Adam Boyles. Rossini's overture to "La Cenerentola" (Cinderella) gives a sneak peak at our opera project with Boston Opera Collaborative this summer, Weber's clarinet concerto features master musician and instrument builder Thomas Carroll, and Mendelssohn's Symphony no. 3 ("Scottish") brings the full orchestra together with the historically appropriate sounds of English slide trumpets, natural horns, and classical winds.

Adam Kerry Boyles is an experienced orchestral conductor and singer. He is the Music Director of the MIT Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of MetroWest Opera, and a Staff Conductor with Boston Opera Collaborative. He was Music Director of the Southern Arizona Symphony Orchestra and of the University of Texas at Austin Orchestra. Guest conducting engagements include performances with the Muncie Symphony Orchestra, Austin Chamber Ensemble, Audio Inversions, Oregon Bach Festival, and the University of Arizona Opera Theater. He was Staff Conductor at Opera in the Ozarks for two summers where he led and assisted with many performances. Dr. Boyles made his New York debut with the Manhattan School of Music Orchestra in the 2004 Kurt Masur Conducting Seminar, and was invited for return appearances in April 2005 & 2008. An experienced singer, Adam performed in numerous operas with the Indiana University Opera Theater, and as a chorister in Arizona Opera's first complete presentation of Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen. Adam has sung with many professional choral ensembles across the country such as Conspirare, Apollo's Voice, Mon Choeur, Cantique, Tucson Chamber Artists, and the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. As a teacher, Adam has held Instructor/Guest Lecturer positions at the University of Texas at Austin, and the University of Arizona. Adam has degrees from Indiana University (BM-voice), The University of Arizona (MM-conducting), and The University of Texas-Austin (DMA-conducting).
With a sound described as "Remarkable" and "Beautifully Warm" (Herald Times), period clarinetist and instrument builder Thomas Carroll performs throughout Europe and North America on historical instruments. He holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory, Indiana University, and the Royal Conservatoire of the Hague, studying early clarinet and chalumeau with Eric Hoeprich, and is a current RCM Graduate Scholar supported by a Lucy Ann Jones Award. Internationally, Thomas has performed under such conductors as Richard Egarr, Jos van Immerseel, Christophe Coin, David Stern, and Alessandro Moccia, and has performed at numerous festivals as an orchestral and chamber musician including Utrecht Oude Muziek, Muziekzomer Gelderland, Young Euro Classic, Festival de Saintes, and Musica Antique Brugge. He has been featured as a concerto soloist with Lyra Baroque and Ensemble ad Libitum to critical acclaim. In the United States, Thomas is the principal clarinet of Mercury Baroque in Houston and with Grand Harmonie, frequently flying back to collaborate with other early music specialists on the east coast. An interest in instrument mechanics and acoustics led Thomas to a secondary career as an instrument builder. He studied woodworking and instrument construction with Linda Shortridge, Rob Turner, and Paul Beekhuizen, and shares a workshop with five other young builders in The Hague.
