Event
quiet Presents "Heavy Lay the Chains," by Josh Hornbeck
Douglass Alexander is the first African American President of the United States. His advisers, his opponents - his wife - all try to convince him to compromise his beliefs, to water down his agenda in order to protect his legacy as the "first black president." Even his ancestors continually draw him into their history of suffering and oppression, pressing him to become a new symbol for his people. But when a young staffer arrives, encouraging him to stand his ground and fight for his beliefs, Douglass must choose between his fallible humanity and the clamor to stand for something greater.
An original play by quiet's Artistic Director, Josh Hornbeck, "Heavy Lay the Chains" continues quiet's season-long exploration of race and the ways we dehumanize "the other." Join us for a thought-provoking discussion on what it means to strip away a person's humanity and transform them into a myth and a symbol. Panel discussions will follow each evening performance.
