Circus Finelli at the Dance Palace
Circus Finelli is four zany, hilarious and unpredictable women clowns, winners of 2007 Pt. Reyes parade award for best entertainers, in a spectacle that is fast-paced, interactive, bright fun, filled with slapstick, acrobatics, juggling and live music. Fresh from two sold out runs in San Francisco and heading out on tour, the Finelli's are ready to transform small problems into epic proportions!
There is an elaborate pre-show entertainment starting at 7:00 pm including face painting and games with the audience. At 7:30 pm the lively show with Czech ringmistress Madame Vinaigrette (Verka Zaskodna) begins. She is a juggling bombshell who jokes with the audience and has dangerous plans to include some in the show. Her musical assistant and assailant is accordionista Luz Gaxiola. Carmelita (Molly Shannon) is a samba dancing ingnue trying to steal the show in full Carnaval regalia, but thwarted by Pepito (Z Smith), the red-striped thunderball exploding from all corners.
"There's a cartoon quality to the sound effects and instruments that texture the string of acts, but it's all dependent on live timing-nothing like you've ever seen on TV or in the movies. There's lots of comical juggling and acrobatics, thrown in with the real thing; humor and excitement are inextricable." Ken Bullock, The Berkeley Daily Planet
"Fresh" "Highly Inventive Comic Acts - full of absurd dialogue and physical comedy." Joel Schecter, Spectacle Magazine
"Filled with music, slap-stick, acrobatics and the seamless chemistry of the four immaculately trained performers, Circus Finelli has a rare synergy." Rashid Zakat, Philadelphia reviewer for Soulaquatics.com
Circus Finelli trained at the San Francisco Clown Conservatory, and takes inspiration from the European Clown tradition and the antics of American Vaudeville. The troupe has toured the East Coast and the Czech Republic and performs regularly in the Bay Area where they live and teach. Circus Finelli can perform in English, Spanish, French, Czech, Italian, and Russian, but even when using words, its emphasis remains on physical comedy. Circus Finelli's approach draws from commedia dell'arte, clown, and melodrama. Please visit their website at www.circusfinelli.com for more information and photos. Footloose Artistic Director, Mary Alice Fry, first invited the troupe to be in the Women on the Way Festival in January, 2007. Fry was excited by the positive audience response to Circus Finelli's variety of skills. Since traditionally, girls are not encouraged to be silly or ridiculous, finding four funny, talented, and obsessively driven women dedicated to performing in the ancient art of silliness was a stroke of luck. After their appearance received critical acclaim, Fry welcomed the Finelli's to develop their show as part of Artists in Motion, the performing arts residency program at Footloose's home base, Shotwell Studios. The performances last fall were a huge hit and sold out! They repeated with sold out shows in May, 2008 at Stage Werx in San Francisco. Now they are headed to West Marin for one night only before embarking on a tour.
