La Bayadere - presented by RhetOracle Dance Company
RhetOracle Dance Company presents their 7th-season production, La Bayadere. RhetOracle is a 2011 Lester Horton award-winning company under the artistic direction of Nate Hodges, who has re-invented La Bayadere from its classical ballet origins into a modernized theatrical jazz production.
Originally taking place in the Orient and focused on the tragic love story of Solor and Nikiya, RhetOracle Dance Company puts a twist on the classic. Set to a score of classic and contemporary blues artists, audiences follow the story of a bar called The Temple. Sam, a returning prodigal son and former manager, comes home to claim his old job and life back, including reigniting his love for old flame, Nikki, the head go-go dancer. However, Regina King, the boss, has her eyes set on Sam marrying her daughter Gemma-Belle and taking over the club and will resort to anything, no matter how risky, to get her way. True love and betrayal, roofies and acid trips, Shades and shimmies take the stage in the form of wild contemporary dancing this May.
"We attempt to create a dialogue with the audience and to execute our stories as clearly as possible," says Nate Hodges, artistic director and choreographer of RhetOracle. "I feel confident that audiences have not seen something quite like this before. It's our exploration of contemporary jazz movement combined with the sharp differences in our re-interpretation that I think audiences will find interesting and, hopefully, riveting. I think audience members will lose themselves in the fun, wild abandon, and irreverent nature of the bar. It's going to be a wild ride."
