Despite this class title, there's no essential distinction between "beginning" writers and "advanced" writers--it's not like a degree or publication makes you advanced. Instead, there are simply writers who write everyday and writers who don't write everyday. While this class will of course cover various techniques of creative writing, such as dialogue, characterization, POV, and structure, more importantly we will create a safe, nurturing space that encourages us to produce, revise, re-revise, and submit our work for publication. In addition to readings, skill exercises, and workshopping, we will review the best practices for writing cover letters, finding magazines (online or print) to submit to, and how to manage submissions.
