Yuba Watershed Fungus Foray - Shields Camp
21st Annual Yuba Watershed Fungus Foray
December 8th, 2018
9 am to 4:30 pm
Start the day at the Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center. After a short introduction, you will carpool with your group to the Shields Camp area, up the San Juan Ridge past North Columbia.
At Shields Camp there are mature forests of madrone, black oak, blue oak, manzanita, Douglas-fir and pine. There is a creek to explore. The big madrone grove is a great place for practicing collecting. Edible varieties found in past: Queen Bolete, Chanterelle, Honey Mushroom, Butter Boletus.
Please note: this area has recently been treated for fuels reduction, so there are a lot of cut trees and branches on the ground.
Bring a bagged lunch and be prepared to walk in the damp woods. Also useful: collection basket, waxed paper bags, knife, and hand lens. Please carpool if possible. This is a rain or shine event.
Following the collection foray, we will come together at the Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center for identification discussions, fungi related presentations, educational workshops, and there will be wild mushroom soups and other wild crafted and delicious food for sale.
