Learn how to effectively identify and screen parents experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. This two-day training is appropriate for a range of providers, including OBs, pediatricians, midwives, RNs, social workers, mental health therapists, doulas, public health employees, home visitors, IBCLCs, and more.
This training is offered by Perinatal Support WA through a grant from Strengthening Families Washington at the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) and generously hosted by Valley Medical Center Women & Children's Services.
Objectives of this training: Friday Feb 1st: Basic Topics *Understand the "real" transition to parenthood. *Know the spectrum of perinatal mental health disorders *Know the risk factors for PMADs. *Know key prevention strategies. *Understand high risk populations and health disparities. *Be knowledgeable about the impacts of perinatal mental health on families and communities. *Know the components of a treatment plan. *Be able to effectively talk about, and screen new/expectant parents for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Saturday Feb 2nd: Advanced Topics *Understand the impact of birth experiences on postpartum emotional health. *Be knowledgeable about risk and symptoms for partners and fathers. *Be knowledgeable about psychiatric medications during pregnancy and breastfeeding. *Be knowledgeable about supporting families in the NICU *Be knowledgeable about feeding issues and perinatal mental health. *Understand the impact on infant and children *Understand impacts on partners and relationships.
****You may register for Day 2 only if you have previously taken at least 6 hours of training in an overview of perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
More than a two day training, we hope this will begin an ongoing conversation and collaboration with partners in Washington, particularly those representing under-served communities. Please contact us for more information.

Heidi Koss, LMHC is a psychotherapist in private practice, serving individuals, couples and families, with an emphasis on pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, birth trauma, as well as treating other related birth issues.
Heidi has contributed to the field of perinatal mental health in many ways over her career. She is the Co-Founder of the Northwest Association for Postpartum Support (NAPS). She served on the WA state leadership advisory committee for the Speak Up When Youre Down Postpartum Depression Awareness Campaign and has been an instructor at the Seattle Midwifery School for their PPMD course. She has collaborated on a PPMD training curriculum with the University of WA School of Nursing Infant Mental Health and Development Program and the Washington State Department of Health First Steps Division. She has been a Certified Postpartum Doula and Certified Lactation Educator for over twelve years, and the recipient of the prestigious DONA International Penny Simkin Award in 2006. Heidi is also the proud mother of 2 beautiful daughters.
Leslie Butterfield, PhD is a clinical psychologist who specializes in pregnancy and postpartum issues. At her Seattle, WA private practice she works with moms and couples struggling with pregnancy and neonatal loss, the transition to parenthood, pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders, and birth related trauma. Additionally, she has designed and taught the counseling skills curriculum for Seattle Midwifery School and Bastyr Naturopathic Universitys Department of Midwifery for the past 15 years.
In her capacity as an educator, Leslie has provided trainings and consultations to: University of Washington; Singapore KKH Hospital for Women; AWHONN(Association of Womens Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses); Marce Society; PALS (Pacific Association of Labor Support); API (Attachment Parenting International), NAPS (Northwest Association for Postpartum Support), Catholic Charities, Planned Parenthood, and others. Recently she has served on the board of PATTCh (Prevention and Treatment of Traumatic Childbirth) as Vice President, and Perinatal Support Washington as the former chair and current board member.
