Solitary Man
The Arcata Playhouse is honored to host Solitary Man: A Visit to Pelican Bay State Prison, an engaging two-person play with music, on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2018. The play revolves around Charlie Hintons experiences from his visits to Pelican Bay, Californias first maximum security prison, located in Crescent City. He developed the script based on letters he received during and after the 60 day hunger strike of 2013, in which 30,000 California prisoners participated.
In the play, Charlie takes you into the prison with him to visit Otis Washington, played by New York actor and musician Fred Johnson. Otis is 64 and has been imprisoned for over 40 years, the last 32 in solitary confinement. He participated in all three hunger strikes since 2011, and as the story evolves, he shares some of what he has learned and experienced.
