Tuesdays in the Newsroom: Behind the Scenes at the Courthouse
The brick courthouse on Main Street in Edgartown houses, among other things, the Superior Court for Dukes County, the trial court of general jurisdiction for civil and criminal matters. While a succession of judges have presided over felony trials and business disputes in the last four decades, the operation of the court has been overseen by just one man, Clerk of Courts Joseph E. Sollitto. Mr. Sollitto, who empanels juries, hears parking ticket appeals and supervises dockets for the hundreds of cases filed each year in Dukes County, will retire in January from a job he has been elected to seven times. What really goes on behind the scenes at the courthouse? You can ask Joe yourself when Tuesdays in the Newsroom returns with an appearance by our inimitable clerk.
