Julie Rhodes with GA-20
Somervilles Rhodes possesses the kind of voice that transcends time and place, reminiscent of smooth 60s soul crooners with a dash of the ragged howl heard in Alabama Shakes Brittany Howard. So its fitting that the former ice-cream parlor scooper recorded her debut album at Muscle Shoals FAME Studios, where the likes of Etta James, Aretha Franklin and Otis Redding once sang. That fiery 2016 debut, Bound to Meet the Devil, was a hell of an entrance to the music world, earning the singer/ songwriter four Boston Music Award noms and one win for Best New Artist this winterafter just one year as a working musician. - Improper Bostonian
There arent many unknown artists who get to record their debut albums partially at Muscle Shoals Fame Studios with legends such as keyboardist Spooner Oldham, guitarist Greg Leisz and fiddler Sara Watkins sitting in. But, there arent many new singers as impressive as Julie Rhodes either. - American Songwriter On the cusp of a meteoric rise in the songwriter community, Julie Rhodes is a powerhouse vocalist with authentic soul, grounded both in the songwriting traditions of yesterdays Americana and todays very present social and political issues. - Howl Magazine
