Yuba Watershed Fungus Foray - Hornswoggle
21st Annual Yuba Watershed Fungus Foray
December 8th, 2018
9 am to 4:30 pm
Start the day at the Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center. After a short introduction, you will carpool with your group to the Hornswoggle Campground, near Camptonville.
This is the longest drive from Shady Creek but it has the most (maybe best) areas to explore the tanoak woodlands surrounding New Bullards Bar Reservoir. There is some recreational picking activity (competition) and so one has to walk a bit out of campground to find undisturbed mushroom areas. Be aware of rare fungi found here and please take note of them (do not pick). Edible varieties found in the past: lions mane, hedgehog, matsutake, queen bolete, and white chanterelle.
Hiking difficulty: advanced/experienced mushroom hunters only due to technical terrain.
Bring a bagged lunch and be prepared to walk in the damp woods. Also useful: collection basket, waxed paper bags, knife, and hand lens. Please carpool if possible. This is a rain or shine event.
Following the collection foray, we will come together at the Shady Creek Outdoor School and Event Center for identification discussions, fungi related presentations, educational workshops, and there will be wild mushroom soups and other wild crafted and delicious food for sale.
