"God's Horses" by Nabil Ayouch (Morocco, 2012, 115 min) - Alwan Film Festival 2013
Set in a slum on the outskirts of Casablanca, God's Horses is a powerful drama based on the events leading to the Moroccan bomb attacks of 2003. Ayouch has crafted an original and moving adaptation of a best-selling Moroccan novel, The Stars of Sidi Moumen, mixing social realism with epic grandeur. There are three main characters that we meet as children playing football and follow them through the tragic trajectories in adulthood. Ayouch's rich, aesthetic style conveys the texture of the quotidian lives of the slums, while the film's sweeping highlight the fissures within society.
