"The Last Friday" by Yahya Alabdallah (Jordan/Palestine/UAE, 2012, 88 min) - Alwan Film Festival 2013
The absurdities and complexities of life in contemporary Amman are presented with understated humor in The Last Friday. This small but extremely well-crafted tale of a divorced, downwardly mobile taxi driver trying to gather the funds for essential surgery has a singular tone that is both pensive and gently comic. Forty-year-old Youssef lives alone in a shabby apartment; his life consisting of small indignities that he accepts with a weary grace. His finances are so precarious that he resorts to stealing his neighbor's electricity, and now his situation is even more critical because he needs to prepay the hospital by Friday. Youssef finds himself reaching out to estranged family members and friends to salvage what is left of his life.
