Introduction to Silk Painting -- Stephany Andrews
This is an introductory course on silk painting. Painting on silk is a wonderful way to create unique articles of clothing, beautiful wall hangings, and other enchanting pieces to enjoy. This ancient Asian artistic technique is surprisingly easy to learn. During this course, we'll see a demonstration of various silk-painting techniques, such as the use of salt and alcohol on the silk, painting on a dry cloth, and on a wet one. Stephany will use a tube of 'gutta' to outline a picture on the silk - much like creating a coloring book page. Then she will apply the dye. The 'gutta' helps to 'color inside the lines.' After the demonstration, each participant will create their own works of art--copying a picture onto a silk hoop, applying gutta, then painting their pictures to take home and treasure. You might discover that you would like to pursue this form of artistic expression. Suggested Prerequisites, Materials or Texts for Participants, if any: Each participate will be provided with the necessary supplies to create their own original silk painting. The charge for the supplies is $15 per registrant. Instructor Biography: Since retiring, Stephany Andrews has pursued her love of art using many of the ideas she gleaned from her global travels. Her primary focus is Chinese Brush Paintings, Silk Scarves and Paintings although she continues to study other mediums through local artists and colleges. She has studied Chinese brush painting with Yet Por Cheng, former director of the Art Institute in Taiwan; Judy Chiu, Joy Harvey, Tom Chow and Phyllis Case Bennett. In 2006 she spent a month in China studying at the China Art Institute, where she studied with a different master in the disciplines of calligraphy, figures, landscapes, birds and flowers. She has also studied with a wide range of local artists including Traci de Castro, Jacqueline Bradley, Jill Targer, Jean-Louis Mireault, Natasha Foucault, Susan Moyer, Lee Zimmerman, Liena Dieck, Suzanne Punch, and Paula Carnell.
