Music of Thelonius Monk and the great stride pianists he loved: James P. Johnson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Willie the Lion Smith. After an opening set of a special tribute to jazz giant Thelonius Monk Berkshire Bop Society will play tunes for dancing salsa, swing and more.
Berkshire Bop Society is Lincoln Mayorga, piano, Sheri Bauer-Mayorga, vocals, Otto Gardner, bass, and Ted MacKenzie, drums. The ensemble's core group has performed and recorded an eclectic tour of American music on the TownHall label On The Wrongside of the Railroad Tracks, and American Snapshots: 200 Years of American Song. They have been a favorite at the PS21 swing evenings since 2006.
As pianist, arranger, and conductor, Lincoln Mayorga recorded with Johnny Mathis, Barbra Streisand, Vikki Carr, Mel Torme, Phil Ochs, Frank Zappa, and Quincy Jones among others. He was featured on NPR's "Piano Jazz," with Marion McPartland. Sheri Bauer-Mayorga is a vocalist, songwriter and recording artist who has worked the underground, alternative and grassroot scenes. Otto Gardner is a highly regarded bass player in the Capital Region playing with Francesca Tanksley, Chuck D'Aloia, and others. Lincoln and Otto play regularly at the Blue Plate in Chatham most Wednesday nights.t
"Mayorga's incredible repertoire of tunes, from pop to show to classical, inform almost his every lick, and Gardner's driving, creative bass, constantly pushes Mayorga back to his deep well of music." Jeff Waggoner, albanyjazz.com
