Lay Low Moon / Danny Hoshino / Kris Gruen
Lay Low Moon is an Indie-Folk-Pop collective built around the songs of Seán McKenna and is comprised of Seán and various friends around Boston, MA. The name Lay Low Moon was inspired by some lyrics from the Beck song, Guess Im Doing Fine off of the album, Sea Change, a collection that inspired McKennas early songwriting. Their sound and songwriting have been compared to Ryan Adams, Mojave 3, Neil Young, The Essex Green and Jeffrey Gaines. In various forms, Lay Low Moon has performed at many of the well established venues around the Greater Boston area, including Club Passim, The Middle East and many others.
In 2015, a version of their song, "Thru & Thru" was featured on a compilation titled One Hundred Thousand Voices, with proceeds benefiting a great charity organization called 'Active Minds,' who's mission is to provide mental health outreach on college campuses around the country.
Their first full length release, On This Day Last Year, produced by Daniel Radin of The Novel Ideas, was released in August of 2018, which offered a departure from the two EPs (respectively titled One Summer and One Winter) released four years prior.
Danny Hoshino was a guitarist/singer with the much loved indie folk/country band The Novel Ideas.
Kris Gruen writes songs about grownup life infused with a mystic wonder, softening the worlds sharp edges like a glass of exceptionally fine bourbon. Kris grew up steeped in classic records. His Americana influenced new folk is grounded in the tradition of great narrative songwriters like Cat Stevens and Paul Simon and yet Kriss voice is strikingly current. A New York City native whos put down roots in Vermont, Kris effortlessly blends sagacious wit and emotional depth.
The new album Coast & Refuge is an album both about and created by partnerships where the sonic and thematic threads feel constant, equally at home in the old townships of Vermont where the new folk-artist lives, as it is in the new frontiers of Scandinavia, and the California coastline where much of it was written. The songs retain folk roots, but bring a contemporary urgency and a big sound. The result draws comparisons to Matthew Perryman Jones, Pete Yorn, Elbow, Griffin House, Ryan Adams, and Peter Bjorn and John; in fact, the latters Peter Morén appears on the album as vocalist and co-writer of one of the first singles Every Day and Night Now.
