Sad Songs and Salty Snacks to celebrate the Season
With Halloween just around the corner, it seemed like a good idea to get out our most beautifully sad music. We start and end with the very best in funeral music Purcells Funeral Sentences, composed for the death of Queen Mary in 1694, and also performed at his funeral within the year; Bachs Funeral Cantata, a surprisingly upbeat Lutheran accounting of death. Between these bookends, we include War and Love madrigals by Monteverdi, delightfully dramatic miniatures describing the human condition; Couperins setting of the Lamentations of Jeremiah for Tenebrae; and dAngleberts musical tombstone for his teacher Chambonnières. The group changes in size to meet the needs of the music. For this concert, we have four brilliant solo singers and five instrumentalists playing harpsichord, organ, recorder, dulcian and viola da gamba. Albany Consort concerts are informal no one has to stay glued to their seat, and you are encouraged to breath, to cry, to laugh and to sigh. After the concert, there will be salty snacks and some sweet ones.
