Legal protection in the fashion and design industry is fraught with difficulties.While imitation may be the ultimate form of compliment, it can also be financially devastating to the small or independent designer.The increased demand for knock-offs has fueled the counterfeit market and has cost the fashion industry millions of dollars a year.Washington Lawyers for the Arts presents a panel discussion on legal protection in the fashion industry and how best to arm yourself against counterfeits.
ABOUT THE PANEL: Patricia A. Raskin,Founder & Creative Director, Anne Sylvian After receiving her J.D. from the University of Washington, Patricia worked with the business and technology practice groups at Davis Wright Tremaine and later at Cairncross & Hempelmann. In 2003, Patricia co-founded Raskin Snodgrass & Kearns, a business and technology boutique practice, and in 2009, Raskin Law Group.In 2011, Patricia founded "Anne Sylvain", a line of luxury leather goods sold in high end boutiques throughout the United States and online in the U.S., U.K. and India. Anne Sylvain was selected by the Bellevue Collection in 2012 as one of the premier independent designers in the Pacific Northwest and Patricia was recently interviewed live on CNN about her collection.
Lisa Vian Hunter,Vian Hunter House of FashionLisa earned a fashion design degree from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandisingof San Francisco in 2004.Upon graduating, Lisa started her business in custom clothing which led to the development of her own collection of dresses and separates. She opened her first boutique in Palo Alto, Californiaandin 2009relocated totheMadison Valley neighborhood of Seattle,whereVian Hunter House of Fashion is currently located.
Moderator, Chad M. Smith Chad is an intellectual property attorney, emphasizing in the procurement of trademarks, strategic branding, domain name disputes and trademark prosecution. He is a former Trademark Examining Attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office and has more than 16 years of experience working with large and boutique law firms. In addition to his legal practice, Chad is an Adjunct Professor at Seattle University School of Law where he teaches a class on trademark prosecution.
