Stranger, Lover, Dreamer + Kat Yoas 6/16 + Erik Wagner 6/20
Part of The Garage AIRspace residency program for queer performance.
GUEST ARTISTS JUNE 16 Kat Marie Yoas (spoken-word) JUNE 20 Erik Wagner (contemporary dance)
This evening of dance by Shaunna Vella, Rogelio Lopez, Elizebeth Randall and Andrew Merrell exposes the complex layers of identity, gender expression, and vulnerability through risk taking physicality and emotional subjectivity. We are seeking our truths as lovers, friends, strangers, soulmates, enemies, scene stealers and exhausted, relentless moving bodies. We will unravel through isolation, relationship, and community as we find realities and dreams that rarely hit the surface. We say yes to everything.
Shaunna Vella is a dancer, choreographer and performance artist whose work has been seen at ODC, Dance Mission, The Garage, Counterpulse, Studio 210, and Ashby Stage. Rogelio Lopez is a dancer, choreographer, whose work has been performed by different universities and dance companies. Much of his choreography has been shown at The American College Dance Festival, and at The Kennedy Center. Elizebeth Randall is a Bay Area native who has performed, choreographed, and taught both locally and in New York and Boston, presenting her work most recently at SOMArts, and NYU's Second Avenue Dance Company. Andrew Merrell is a dancer/choreographer who is a recent transplant from the Los Angeles area. He has been commissioned to make work for colleges, and has created work for art collective shows in LA and Bay Area
Kat Marie Yoas (guest artist June 16) presents A LESBIAN'S GUIDE TO SELF CARE...IN THE 90s: Episode One. Get out your sage, dust off those crystals, put on that Ani DiFranco album, pour a sly cup of wine in your tea mug and settle in for a cozy journey into the depths of a Midwestern working class dyke's journey in San Francisco on her way to self care and self love. Stories songs and slip ups abound as she navigates her path through life as though she were not walking through it, but instead, sliding on a banana peel. Kat Marie Yoas is exploring grief, confusion, shame and heartache with her trusty guides of humor, zaniness and music guiding the way.
Kat Marie Yoas is a writer, performer, comic and singer living and loving in San Francisco. She has mined her stories from her strange hometown in Michigan to Steel Magnolias to her working class roots to her workplace, the last remaining lesbian bar in the city. Kat Marie has performed these stories and characters on stages across the US, the UK and Europe on her adventures with the legendary Sister Spit tour as well as her own readings and productions. She's recently nished her rst one woman show, the sold out WORD PARTY at The Garage. Kat Marie's work can be found in classrooms, her zines and chapbooks, magazines, and the anthologies It's So You: 35 Women on Fashion and Style, Sister Spit: Writing, Rants and Reminiscence from the Road and Not Another Wave: Dispatches from the Next Generation of Feminists.
