Dom Flemons, The American Songster, is a Grammy Award winning musician, singer-songwriter, and slam poet. Carrying on the songster tradition, Flemons strives to mix traditional music forms with a contemporary approach, to create new sounds that will appeal to wider audiences. In his recent solo album Prospect Hill (2014), Flemons drew from a wide range of styles, including ragtime, Piedmont blues, spirituals, southern traditional music, string band music, fife and drum music, and jug-band music. He began his career as a performer in the Arizona music scene, where he produced 25 albums for singer-songwriters and slam poets in Pheonix. In 2005, Flemons co-found the Carolina Chocolate Drops, an African-American string band that won a Grammy for its 2010 album Genuine Negro Jig. Today, he tours throughout the United States and internationally as The American Songster. In February 2016, Dom performed at Carnegie Hall for a Tribute to LeadBelly. In September 2016, Dom performed at the opening ceremonies for the National Musuem of African American History and Culture in Washington, DC. KEVIN B.F. BURT, WINNER OF THE 34TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL BLUES CHALLENGE! The harmonica wizard from Coralville, Iowa. Kevin Burt will be releasing his debut album Heartland & Soul (Little Village) on October 30. The album was produced by Jim Pugh who was Robert Crays keyboardist for over two decades and features Kevins extremely powerful, soulful and expressive vocals, plus a crack band of musicians including Jerry Jemmot who recorded Think with Aretha Franklin. Please see below for audio link.
Kevin Burt was the big man of the evening at the International Blues Challenge in Memphis last January as he won the three awards he was eligible for: Solo/Duo, Best Solo/Duo Guitarist, and the Lee Oskar Award for Best Harmonica Player. Following his performance at the awards he was also booked to perform at the 2018 Chicago Blues Festival. Kevin is a self-taught musician (vocals, harmonica, and guitar) whose smooth, warm vocal presentation sets a mood of relaxed exhilaration, with a welcome mixture of serious music and infectious humor audiences of all ages seem to enjoy. Two of Kevins primary influences are Bill Withers and Aaron Neville and he has the ability to build a great rapport with the audience with his soul-inspired presentation and natural stage presence.
In this day and age where celebrity status is often conveyed on people with little discernible skills or talent, it is refreshing when the spotlight finally lands on someone who has worked hard, paid their dues, and actually deserves recognition for their talent. Such is the case with Kevin B.F. Burt, the singer and multi-instrumentalist who created quite a buzz on Beale St. in Memphis during the first three days of this years International Blues Challenge, winning 3 awards !! 1st place in the Solo/Duo category, the Cigar Box Guitar Award for best guitarist in Solo/Duo category, and the Lee Oskar Award for best harmonica player!
