Stand-up comedian Drew Michael is set to record his debut album, "Lovely", in the beautiful back room of Timothy O'Toole's Pub in downtown Chicago, May 16-18. Each show will feature a full-length set from Drew Michael as well as an opening set from one of Drew's favorite Chicago comedians. Teaming up for the second time, Comedians You Should Know and Red Bar Comedy will co-produce.
Tickets for all shows are $10.
Drew began doing stand-up in his hometown of Chicago in 2008. Since then, he has cultivated his dark, fearless perspective, prodding the collective unconscious relentlessly in front of crowds in Chicago and across the U.S. Covering a wide range of topics -- religion, art, Hitler, bestiality, love, etc. -- Drew attempts to answer the question, "How do you find honest meaning in a world so completely full of shit?" Described as "smart, funny, and unabashedly crass" by TimeOut Chicago, Drew has continued to evolve and establish himself as a prominent, much-needed voice in the stand-up comedy world.
Drew was nominated for the Rooftop Comedy Award, "Best Club Comic", in 2010. He is a co-founder of Comedians You Should Know, a stand-up comedy collective in Chicago whose debut album reached #1 on the iTunes comedy charts in 2011. Drew went on to perform in the Bridgetown Comedy Festival and the Just For Laughs Festival in 2012. Drew's also hosts a podcast called "I Might Be Wrong".
A note from Drew's announcement on his website:
"Stand-up is a beautiful thing, or at least it can be. It's a person expressing him/herself to a group of (relative) strangers who congeal to form the symbiotic yang to the performer's yin. It's a great way to articulate ideas, insights, emotional moments, satire, parody, or pure absurdity, so long as it's wrapped in honesty. You can take yourself and the audience on a journey to the deep recesses of our collective consciousness -- the dark spots that terrify us -- and, together, laugh and go, "This isn't so bad after all." It's a sacred medium for me. I always have a hard time watching stand-up exploited as a "stepping stone" to the entertainment industry (or as a way to make quick cash on the way out), rather than an art form in and of itself. It's quite possible I'm overly romanticizing the profession of being a daiquiri and pretzel bite salesman, but I do my best to honor these ideals out of respect for the people before me who have done this way better."
