DASSdance - Untitled, 1982 -NYC Premiere
DASSdance presents Untitled, 1982, a work inspired by Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring. Using the emotional twists, balletic turns, and acrobatic feats of DASSdance's signature All-Terrain Dance style, Untitled, 1982, navigates the tumultuous, boundary-pushing creative process of visual artists in 1980s New York City.
Focusing on the social environment in the artist's loft and creative moments on the street, Untitled, 1982, was inspired by the 15 years artistic director/choreographer Daniel Wilkins spent in NYC among the late-night visual art community that once gravitated around Warhol, Basquiat, and Haring. In the fitting setting of HunderdGrand SoHo, Wilkins will create a multi-media art installation that transports audience members into a world of reflection, ingenuity, and pronounced gritty expressionism. Untitled, 1982, will incorporate post-punk new wave music as well as works Basquiat collaborated on or listened to while creating. Videography, writing and visual art from the Director and Dancers share the stage with athletic, eclectic--and unique-- choreography.
Michael van Baker of The Sun Break says "..you never know what's coming next.." "..all appear gymnastically inclined, with rolls over backs, jumps to their feet from their backs, cartwheels from every conceivable attitude."
