BIG WORLD BAND IN CONCERT - DIALOGUE
Big World Band makes New World Music that mirrors Vancouver in the 21st century, with roots in China, India, the Middle East and Europe.
The Big World Band paints multicoloured the music of French composer Erik Satie, reveals the Byzantine hallucinations of BC composer Scott Godin, along with solos by sitarist Mohamed Assani, Iranian oud player Hossein Behroozinia and Chinese ruan player Zhimin Yu, and the cultural mixologies of Vancouver composers Farshid Samandari and John Oliver.

Mohamed Assani, sitar, tabla
Mohamed Assani is a celebrated sitarist with a unique sound. He is widely known for his authentic raga performances as well as his creative ability to adapt his instrument to different genres. Mohamed's musical journey began at Dartington College of Arts in England, where he did a degree in Western Classical and World music. He has learned sitar in the traditional way and is a senior disciple of Ustad Ashraf Sharif Khan of the Poonch Gharana. Mohamed has performed throughout the UK & Europe, including with his band Indus, who have been hailed as 'ones to keep a beady eye upon' by Roots magazine. He has recently relocated to Vancouver, Canada.
Hossein Behroozinia (Persian: حسین بهروزی نیا) (b. 1962 in Tehran) is a renowned Iranian barbat and oud player. He studied oud under the supervision of Mansour Nariman and also learned the radif under the supervision of Mohammad Reza Lotfi. He was a student at the Conservatory of Persian music, and later the music director of Ensemble Khaleghi as well as the director of music education at the Center of the Preservation Persian music. The Los Angeles Times describes Behroozinia's work as "spectacular musicianship".[1] In 2003 the Ministry of Culture of Iran decorated him with its highest honor, the "First Order of Arts". Hamin Honari, hand drums
Hamin Honari was born in Zahedan, Iran. He grew up in Canada and has been immersed in music from an early age. Hamin has studied Tombak with Ramin Bahrami since the age of 13 and later continued his studies with Master Pejman Haddadi. He currently performs with the Vancouver groups Sangha and the Honari Ensemble, and tours throughout North America. He teaches at the Persian Cultural and Art Institute in North Vancouver.
Guilian Liu (Panda Liu ), pipa
Born in Shanghai, graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music (Beijing), Guilian Liu won first prizes at an early age in competitions held throughout China. Ms. Liu has performed around the world in Europe, U.S.A., Russia, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Macau. In "From MAO To MOZART", an Academy Award winner for Documentary Feature (1980), Miss Liu played the Pipa for Isaac Stern and won much recognition from the Master. Guilian Liu has also been highly commended by a number of local and international maestros, like Prof. Zuqiang Wu, Dehai Liu, Shicheng Lin, and Seiji Ozawa, as well as Herbert von Karajan. John Oliver, Co-Artistic Director, guitars, composition
Oliver writes and performs music for acoustic instruments and electroacoustic media. He believes that music should resonate the whole listener (intellect, emotion, and body). Oliver came to international attention during 1988/89 when he won six prizes for five compositions ranging from chamber to orchestral to electroacoustic music. He studied guitar at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with George Sakellariou, where he gave several recitals. At the age of 19, Oliver gave up a performance career to dedicate himself to music composition, which he studied with composers John Adams, Stephen Chatman, John Rea and Bruce Mather. While writing music full time, Oliver continues to perform as classical and electric guitarist with the likes of Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver New Music, Turning Point Ensemble, Vancouver Chinese Music Ensemble and others. His music appears on CDs from Centrediscs, empreintes DIGITALes, earsay, CBC Records, ZaDiscs, SNE and McGill University Records.
Farshid Samandari, Co-Artistic Director, bass guitars, percussion, composition
Farshid Samandari was born in Iran in 1971. There he studied composition and piano with Dr. Mehran Rouhani, and Hainosh Makarian. Later, he continued his studies in composition and electroacoustics with Dorothy Chang, Stephen Chatman, Keith Hamel and Bob Pritchard at the University of BC. His music reflects his interest in contemporary classical vocabulary, spectral analysis, and extended techniques. In addition, his profound faith in unity in diversity, stirred him toward utilizing different elements from a variety of non-western music and integrating different cultural music and vocabulary in his compositions. This vision directed him to collaborate with a variety of choirs and ensembles including Tehran National Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Red Shift Vertical Orchestra, Atlas Ensemble, Laudate Singers, Turning Point Ensemble, Motion Ensemble, Musica Nova, Nu:bc Collective, Standing Wave Ensemble, Red Chamber Quartet, Orchid Ensemble, and many others.
His Apogee for the flute had won him Vancouver New Music 06, other half an aria from his upcoming chamber opera SunarcanuS was awarded as CUMS09 best composition and coming home, a trio for flute, double bass and percussion, had won CUMS/CLC11.
Zhimin Yu, zhongruan, daruan
was born in Beijing, China. She started learning pipa at an early age. Yu was a member of the China Broadcast Performing Arts Troupe and also performed in the Asian Arts Festival in Hong Kong and Japan. Later, she went to Japan again to organize a Chinese Folkloric Troupe. Yu was recognized as an ambassador of Chinese folk arts in Japan and often appeared on NHK television... Later, she immigrated to Canada where she continues her musical career. She plays in many groups and has performed in major cities in Canada and the United States and toured Britain, France, Holland, Hawaii, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Hong Kong. She has performed in festivals worldwide and appeared on many CDs and broadcast recordings for CBC radio and television, BBC, Songlines, and others.
