DOOM LOVER - materialized in the wake of a class of dying Boston bands. Former Big East frontman Jeffrey Vachon called on drummer John Lee (We Met Aliens) and Geoff Smith and Kyle Allain (De Osos) for a fresh start.
Building on and merging an array of sounds, Doom Lover employs the distinct songwriting styles of the two Jeff/Geoffs, Vachon a soulful-bard with a punky spirit, Smith a shoegazing romantic, as well as the studied rhythmic core of Lee and Allain, capable of reaching alternately thunderous and buoyant places.
Since forming, Doom Lover has practiced an open door policy, recruiting Stereo Telescope's Nikki Dessingue and fellow Big East alum Sam Toabe to augment what Vachon hopes to become "one big, weird army."
BROTHERS McCANN - creates dynamic palettes of sound, weaving sweeping three-part harmonies over rustic reinventions of folk-rock. Mike, Pat and Erik nurture the heart of their New England musical upbringing with three unique songwriting styles on rotating display. The raw simplicity of acoustic guitars, keyboard and vocals welcomes the eager, patient listener to invest in their melodies and experience an honest, live performance.
THE LAWSUITS - have been described as a "schizophrenic mix of modern americana that could very well bring traditionalists and the new generation of folk-rock fans together under one sun." They play with an energy that's infectious, charging through changeups and reveling in every solo, making the playing of each song look as enjoyable as it is to listen to. The songs are intricate and insightful in a way that recalls a time when music was more pure, but with a progressive and lighthearted style that seems natural for such a young group. The band consists of songwriter and lyricist Brian Dale Allen Strouse, accompanied by Vanessa Winter's alternately dancing and soulful vocals over the tight and powerful backing of Brendan Michael Cunningham, Josh Aaron Friedman and Noah Skaroff.
THE DEJAS - Recently voted "Favorite Band in Salem" in Art Throb magazine's reader's poll, "The Dejas" are a performing duo that produces, records, and performs their unique, melodic, ambient indie pop. The band is comprised of Callie Lipton and Aaron Z. Katz who met at the University of New Hampshire in 2005, felt an immediate connection, and soon began working together in what was to become a highly creative collaboration. Both singer-songwriters, Lipton plays guitar and sings lead vocals. Her voice was recently described in a review written for Boston's radio station WERS as "sultry with a fun edge" and often by others as "warm", "pure" or "universal". Katz was formerly the drummer and singer songwriter for the critically acclaimed national act, Percy Hill. In The Dejas, Katz provides the rhythmic foundation of the band. In 2007, The Dejas won the Spotlight Eye on the Arts: "Alternative Band-of-the-Year Award". Last year The Dejas teamed up with producer/engineer Sean McLaughlin to create their debut album, "Speeding Softly", which soon garnered them music licensing deals with CBS, MTV, and the Lifetime and CW networks. For the last six years, the band has performed in the Boston area and toured the Northeast, playing in a wide variety of venues. Callie and Aaron like to describe their music as a "powerful whisper". Deja fans express that the music has the ability to move them to dance... as well as move them to tears. Reviewer Chris Elliot (Seacoast.com) writes about the "gentle, unforced, seeming inevitability of the songs themselves", songs that stand on their own merit, wonderful melodies that linger and engage, staying with the listener in some profound, enduring way that is both inspiring and somehow re-affirming.
